INSIGHTFUL
If you’ve ever wondered what really goes on inside charitable organisations in the developing world, then this book will certainly provide a fascinating insight. Charting Michaels personal journey from a green Peace Corp volunteer in the Philippines to Chief Exec of AMREF (originally the African ‘Flying Doctor’ service) we’re taken on a journey across Asia and Africa and, in so doing, offered rare glimpses into the varying cultures and life-styles of the local inhabitants of places such as Kenya, Somalia and the Sudan. Forget the romanticised images of the wild-life reserves of the Maasai Mara and look beyond the news footage of the latest famine or uprising and we see ordinary people doing their amazing best. Through these adventures we can also far better appreciate the hard work done by Michael, and many others like him, to bring about improvements to those we know so little about.
This book is autobiographical, with Michael telling his stories as if chatting to us after dinner: it’s friendly and engaging . . . and full of much fascinating information about the developing world . . . and the response of developed nations to it. This is also a travel book providing much useful information . . . and a thought provoking, well balanced, observation on human nature.
For anyone intrigued by our diverse world and its peoples, this book is essential reading. Thank you Michael, for sharing your experiences with us.
